    GENERAL INFORMATION

    The UM-Educational Opportunity Center is a U.S. Department of Education grant supported program which is designed to assist adults 19 years and older in the Prince George’s County inner-beltway communities to enroll or re-enroll in institutions of post-secondary education. The UM-Educational Opportunity Center has functioned in an exemplary manner since its beginning and has provided academic and financial information, counseling, advising, and assistance to more than 850 low income and/or first generation college students. This assistance has made it possible for more than 80 individuals to obtain their GED’s and enter into or return to college.

    Primary Population

    The primary population to be served must be persons who:

  • Have dropped out of high school
  • Have completed high school and have not attended college
  • Have dropped out of college without completing their degree requirements
  • College transfers who need assistance with identification and requisition of financial aid to enroll or continue in post-secondary education

    APPLICATION PROCESS

    • Complete the initial application

    • Meet with educational specialist to discuss your educational plan

    Eligibility Criteria

    • 19 years of age or older

    • Students who are unable to be served by Talent Search or Upward Bound Trio programs

    • Low income

    • First generation college status

    • Veteran status

    • Overall established need for UM-EOC services

    **Each applicant will be evaluated on an individual basis

    UM-EOC GOAL AND SERVICES

    The goal of the UM-Educational Opportunity Center is to secure eligible Prince George’s County adults and assist them in entering or re-entering post secondary education.

    Services Provided:

  • Academic, personal, and career counseling
  • Admission application assistance
  • Short refresher academic skill enhancement workshops
  • Financial aid application assistance
  • Other related services

    UM-EOC HIGHLIGHTS

    The UM-Educational Opportunity Center has assisted with the enrollment or re-enrollment of more than 100 students into postsecondary education during it’s first year of existence. The UM-EOC sponsored it’s first Financial Aid Workshop and College Fair. Both were very successful.

    GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR THE YEAR 2001-2002

    • Serve approximately 1,500 Prince George’s County Residents

    • Enroll at least 75% of students into post-secondary education

    • Assist 100% of applicants in the financial aid process
