Dr. Jerry L. Lewis is Executive Director of Academic Achievement Programs, (AAP) University of Maryland, College Park, MD. As Executive Director of AAP, he supervises two state programs, Summer Transitional Program (STP), Intensive Educational Development Program (IED) and three TRIO programs, EOC, McNair and SSS. Dr. Lewis directed the Upward Bound at UMD for 17 years and at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska for two and one half years. He is the original author the UMD’s Talent Search, McNair and EOC programs. He has more than 40 years of Higher Education administration experience and than 37 years of Trio program administration experience.
Dr. Lewis has played major roles in the development of Trio presence in the National Policy arena; he is a Founders of MEAEOPP, his regional Trio professional association, he is a founder of National Coordinating Council, now, Council for Opportunity in Education (COE). He has testified before the House of Representatives and the US Senate Appropriation and Authorization Committees on several occasions on behalf of TRIO programs. He has served on the COE’s Board of Directors in several capacities. Dr. Lewis is a Certified Grant Writer, (writing more 24 million dollars in grants at UM during his tenure) Public Speaker, and National Consultant, (teaching--federal program regulations and legislation, leadership development, program and staff development, documentation and recordkeeping, budgeting, program-to-campus interface assessments, organizational communication and strategic planning). Dr. Lewis taught Grant writing for several regional, and non-profits organizations. He has also written numerous successful TRIO grants as a consultant. Dr. Lewis has received numerous awards and recognitions for his leadership in Education and Community Service, including the Walter P. Mason national award for "his leadership to enhance education in America-COE, the Chancellor’s Minority Achieving Award-UMD, Black Faculty and Staff Award of Excellence-UMD, Outstanding Associate Staff Member of the Year Award-UMD (1997), Creighton University’s Legacy Award, Drum Major of Excellence Award-Black Ministry Program-UMD and he has been inducted into the Maryland Hall of Fame for his leadership in serving "Low Income and First Generation Students. Dr. Lewis is one of two Trio Professionals to have been granted Life Time Membership status to MEAEOPP.
Dr. Lewis has also held gubernatorial appointed positions in his state, serving on the Maryland Lottery Commission for 17 years and as its Chairman for seven years. He owns a Law Office and practices Civil Law in state of Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Marsha Turner Botts has been with the Academic Achievement Programs since November 1998. In December 1979, Mrs. Botts earned an undergraduate degree from UMUC and proceeded to work in the federal government and non-profit organizations in the Washington metropolitan area before arrival at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Beyene is the author of several books and articles dealing with Retention and Graduation. He has received numerous awards, most recently the Gold Peace Medal from the Interfaith Peace-Building Initiative in September of 2007 and the Silver Medal from the University of Maryland College of Education in May of 2007.

Ms. Lisa Peyton-Caire is an accomplished educator with over 15 years of leadership and service spanning Pre-K through post-secondary education. Beginning her career as a counselor, Ms. Peyton-Caire has worked extensively with children, youth, and families in community-based settings with a particular passion for helping women, girls, and underserved youth of all backgrounds unleash their hidden potential. She has led and/or pioneered many successful initiatives that continue to enrich the lives of young people including leadership development and pre-college preparatory programs for young women and first generation college students. She is the co-founder and former Director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s highly successful Information Technology Academy (ITA), a pre-college technology training & college access program for first generation college students; and most recently served as Assistant Head of School of the 800+ student Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., a K-12 college preparatory school. A tireless advocate for educational quality and opportunity, she is also a founding member of the Next Generation Education Foundation, a Maryland-based non-profit dedicated to the academic and social development of young men. Ms. Peyton-Caire is a 2008 recipient of the Forward Under Forty Award given by the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association for her contributions and achievements in education, and was honored in 2008 as a New Leader by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation of Prince George’s County.

Edna I. González-Velazquez participated in coalition and community development activities as a Community Resource Specialist in 1995. She joined the Academic Achievements Programs in 1998, working in the Educational Opportunity Center in Prince George’s County. She is responsible for career counseling and planning, intake assessment, post-secondary placement services, and admissions and financial aid assistance. In addition, she recruits English as a Second Language students and helps them complete their applications for post-secondary placement.

Muni Amusat attended College of Technology in Nigeria and obtained a National Diploma in Secretarial Administration. (Associate Degree). He also processed various professional certificates in Secretarial Administration both in Nigeria and United Kingdom. He is currently enroll at UMUC and will be graduating in the year 2009 with Information Systems Management Degree. Mr. Amusat has over 25 years work experience in Secretarial Administration both in Nigeria and United States. He joined University of Maryland Academic Achievement Programs - Educational Opportunity Center in January 5, 2000.

Antonio Acevedo taught middle school for eight years in Puerto Rico. While pursuing his graduate degree at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez he served as a teaching assistant for pre-calculus. After coming to school in Maryland he became a graduate assistant with AAP, teaching various entry and second year math support courses. He has been the Mathematics Component Coordinator since 1991.

Mr. Sow has been the English Component Coordinator since 2004. From 1997 until 2004 he lectured at Howard University. He has also been a Faculty Consultant at the Educational Testing Service and a part–time English instructor for Montgomery Community College, Howard Community College, Lado International Center, and Parkland Community College. Dr. Southerland has more than 15 years of leadership and management experiences in academic affairs and student affairs. His previous positions include directorships of retention, TRIO, academic support, and student affairs units. Dr. Southerland has taught research methods courses and is a faculty member at the University of Phoenix and Walden University. His research and teaching interests include: organizational, political, symbolic, and cultural dimensions of leadership in academic organizations; organizational culture, planning, and change; qualitative research methods; written and oral communication; and leadership and project design of educational outreach programs such as federally-funded TRIO programs.

Ms. Foreman has spent the past six years working as a clinical therapist in the areas of addictions counseling, marriage and family therapy, and general mental health counseling. She has given presentations on marriage and family therapy to other mental health professionals and developed family therapy programs for adolescents and their families. Ms. Mitchell received an award for Outstanding Poster Presentation at the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Conference, Family Therapy Section. The poster was entitled, "The role of depression, social support, and gender in a person's decision to leave an emotionally abusive relationship".
